Ryan is a seasoned prosecutor, Marine veteran and father of four. For the last 10 years, he and his wife Lucie have called Spotsylvania County their home, where their children were born and raised, and where Ryan earned a reputation as a tough but fair prosecutor.
In 2002, Ryan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Richmond, Virginia when he was only 17 years old after watching America be attacked by terrorists on 9/11. In 2005, he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and served aboard the USS Kearsarge during a rocket attack in Aqaba, Jordan. In 2006, he deployed with the 24th MEU and flew as aircrew aboard CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters during emergency evacuations from the US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. He was meritoriously promoted twice and left the corps as a Sergeant of Marines in 2008, having also completed a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, summa cum laude, through Campbell University at night.
After serving in the Marine Corps, he attended Mercer University, where he earned a law degree and an MBA in three years. In law school, he developed a love for trial work, winning the school's mock trial competition. Lucie and Ryan married in law school, having known each other since middle school. Upon graduation, Ryan applied to several Commonwealth Attorney’s Offices to gain trial experience.
In 2012, Ryan began trying cases in Lancaster County, Virginia as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. He quickly gained experience and respect, and he accepted a position in Spotsylvania County less than a year later as a prosecutor for the Vice-Narcotics Unit.
Since 2012, Ryan has earned successively higher positions within the office by prosecuting the most difficult and high-profile cases. In 2022, he was the lead prosecutor of a five-codefendant triple homicide, which resulted in convictions for all codefendants and multiple life sentences for three codefendants.
Ryan and his family are parishioners at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Chancellorsville, where they faithfully worship each week. Lucie is a local Realtor and educates their children through a Catholic homeschool curriculum.
Over the years, Ryan has volunteered with a number of charitable causes, including Micah Ministries, Habitat for Humanity and the Knights of Columbus. In the Marine Corps, he helped repair a shelter for distressed and abused women in Manama, Bahrain; visited dyslectic and disadvantaged children in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; helped repair dilapidated sections of a convent for cloistered nuns in Rota, Spain; and, labored on a communal farm for the homeless in Toulon, France.
